The bigger they are, the bigger the shark-jumping. Joss Whedon has done excellent shows like Buffy, Angel, and Firefly. He had a terrific run on the X-men comic book. He deserves his critical acclaim and cult following. But only in this year has he finally had a monster financial hit.
So my guess is that he finally heard the accusation of “sell-out”. And that tired old cliché must have really smarted, given the spew of verbal diarrhea it caused.
Whedon was raised on the Upper Westside neighborhood of Manhattan in the 1970s, an area associated with left-leaning intellectuals. He said he was raised by people who thought socialism was a ”beautiful concept.”
Awww. Poor little ol’ Joss. How that boy suffered, fighting his way up from the mean streets of Manhattan and Beverly Hills. No wonder his hatred of us bourgeois bastards grows with every million dollars he makes. He rightfully despises a hateful middle class that makes its own financial decisions rather than obeying socialists like Joss Whedon. How we disappoint him! When will bad, bad capitalists learn that command economies are better than free markets? Joss knows the truth:
America is “turning into Tsarist Russia”
Fortunately, we know what progresses from that. So perhaps progressives like Joss & Co. will lead us to our socialist utopia, like the one enjoyed today by Soviets and Maoists and Cubans.
I know, I know. It’s a “dog bites man” story. Hubristic Hollywood hypocrite hypes himself. Yawn. But this is the one who did “Firefly”. The one who created Captain Mal Reynolds. Joss Whedon is the one who understands, or at least once understood, the joys of freedom. And he obviously still loves freedom for himself and his beloved imaginary characters.
It’s just not for the likes of us.
