President Barack Obama’s visit to Chicago didn’t stop another violent weekend. At least seven people were killed and 35 were injured since Friday night.
Why on Earth would Barack’s visit stop violence? I thought the Tea Parties were hateful racists, so you’d expect violence to increase during Presidential visits.
That the Windy City is riddled with Tea Partyers came as news to me, though. Maybe Chicago should finally let non-Tea Party citizens arm themselves? After all, it’s not like those “bitter clingers” will give up arms voluntarily.
This weekend marked the beginning of an overtime incentive program to put more police in neighborhoods where crime is highest. Fewer than 60 officers signed up for the program, though.
If you’d told me that only 0.5% of a union’s members wanted O.T., I’d have called you a liar. Jeez, cops, go big or stay home. In fact…why not just stay out of those areas entirely?
Put a gun in the hands of every single adult in the hot zones, keep the cops out…and shortly the death and injury totals will plummet. The transition period might get pretty messy. But we’d be getting a lot fewer of these…
The youngest victim was a 16-year-old girl who died after she was shot three times in the chest…
…and a whole lot more dead gang-bangers Tea-Partiers…
Tang-Bangers?
All right-thinking Americans want to see those murderous bastiches dead or broken. So what’s the holdup?
You know, what makes this whole thing actually funny as hell is that Chicago has basically the toughest anti-gun law in the States. And yet violence with guns (gun-related violence is a BS term) is totally out of control. Similar in DC, by the way, which also has extremely (and utterly retarded) anti-gun laws.
And England’s gun crime rate skyrocketed after it disarmed law-abiding citizens.
Weird…
The British anti-gun laws are so retarded that airsoft guns can’t be in dark, gun-like colors. If they are, importing, selling, buying and even owning is basically illegal.
Wasn’t there something similar in the states where the media or some moronic politician claimed that you could turn an airsoft gun into a real one?
The reason the cops don’t want the OT is simple – they really would like to be alive to collect it.
Kinda like the cops here, where police stations have an armed response provided by private security companies…………….
Yep. And when you’ve got so many things illegal, you can hassle little girls about unlicensed lemonade stands and still be “enforcing the law”.
Have you guys seen Prometheus? Is it any good? I won’t be able to see it for awhile.
Have seen mixed reviews. Will probably wait and see it at home.
Everyone I know who saw it said it was bad. Like in really BAD.
Going at something of a tangent, here…
It’s a little more complex for cops on the Chicago PD. Unfortunately, CPD Administration got corrupted early on by the Outfit (Chicago mob), along with the rest of Chicago government. This didn’t help in the least with the classic problem of Pournelle’s Iron Law of Bureaucracy’s corrupting effect on any organization, and I daresay that the mob’s influence could well have exacerbated the latter problem.
Think it through. If your best efforts are ignored for the sake of a politically-connected jackass with a rabbi greasing the ways to promotion and recognition, and if your reward for risk-taking is to be thrown over the rail by an Administration at the mere suggestion that you might cause embarrassment for an Alderman’s staffer (let alone the City Alderman himself!), regardless of how objectively right your decision might have been… is it any wonder that the good cops find themselves going into a defensive mode that concentrates on making it to the point of collecting a pension? In their position, I’d do the minimum necessary to get by while sending out updated resumes (so to speak) to suburban police departments. (And, don’t give me any self-righteous lecture about “doing what’s right, no matter the cost” – it’s a lot easier to do what’s right when you’re not confronted with being unable to support your wife and child as the cost of doing what’s right…)
There’s a pretty cynical view available from Second City Cop . Worth your time – you don’t necessarily have to endorse his views, but it’s important to get the grunt’s-eye view before you start to prescribe policy. For myself (and, as a former Booking Officer in a rather far-off city from Chicago, I’ll admit to a certain bias), I’ll confine myself to modifying (with suitable apologies to Dr. Pournelle) an observation Jerry Pournelle made a generation ago in the context of the Army that came back from Vietnam:
“A city which treats its police officers with contempt will all too soon find itself with a contemptible police department…”
Chicago had sown the wind generations ago. Perhaps we should regard the whirlwind they now reap as a cautionary tale…
The only part of my post that was serious was arming law-abiding civilians to the teeth. I’m actually more in awe of the 0.5% volunteers than contemptuous of the other 99.5%.
Well, I did say it was at a tangent :-).
