Greetings from Music City, as we broadcast live…
…hmm. This is problematic. We’re pretty sure we’re live, as we type this. God willing, we’ll still be live as we post it. But it won’t be live to you.
Come to think of it…you never witness anything as it happens. What you think you’re witnessing “live” is the past, back when those photons just began their journey, not ended it. Back when the sounds were first made, not heard.
If we have to get technical about it–and you know do–you can’t even make love to another person “live”. You react to the past, not the present.
Depressing? Maybe this will cheer you up. If you’re watching a football game on television, you can hear the calls and plays before most of the people at the stadium. The sound of that crushing hit reaches the TV microphones, gets translated into electronics, broadcast, reconverted to sound by your TV and played through its speakers...before it reaches the furtherest bleachers.
Kinda cool, huh? From a thousand miles away you can hear something before people sitting right there. Hopefully it makes up for the revelation that nothing in your life is ever live.
This is all important enough that we’re going to go ahead and claim this post as a Public Service Announcement.
